Ocean Drive Residence

Newport, Rhode Island

Interior Design: Kim Kirby
Photography: Larry Lambrecht, Warren Jagger

Perched on fifty acres of idyllic bluffs, a 6,400-square-foot residence overlooks Price’s Cove and the Atlantic Ocean.  Previously, the site housed one of the many famed Gilded Age mansions of Newport.  In 1975, the estate experienced a crushing fire that destroyed most of the historic building.  Unable to be restored to its prior glory, the home was demolished when the property changed hands.  The new home, constructed with native stone and a graduated slate roof, was designed to stand the test of time.  Refinement in the detailing juxtaposes this hard shell to create a well-formulated balance of contrasts.  The interior spaces have high cathedral ceilings and spacious walls that showcase a large collection of Will Barnet paintings.  An outdoor kitchen, pool, fire pit and Jacuzzi complete a space ideal for entertaining guests.  Several guest rooms and a lower level bunk room allow the client, who is an avid sailor, to accommodate many of his sailing comrades.  The home was featured in New England Home magazine and Boston Design
