Designed as luxurious accommodations for the owner’s eighty Friesian horses, this 90,000-square-foot barn is one of the largest timber framed structures built in North America in the last century. The cruciform plan allocates separate wings for mares and stallions and is punctuated by a forty-foot tall rotunda. This dramatic space serves as a gallery for the owner’s collection of rare antique carriages and buggies. The wings feature cathedral ceilings supported by a unique timber frame system free of nails; white oak dowels pin together massive fir beams to create a truss system constructed entirely of wood. Each oversize box stall has a run-out and custom iron stall front. The facility also includes a full vet lab, caretaker’s apartment, and farm manager’s office. The elaborate complex appeared on a segment of HGTV’s Million Dollar Rooms and was featured in Connecticut Cottages & Gardens.
