Artist's Studio

Wilton, Connecticut

Following five successful renovation and addition projects to this Wilton, Connecticut home, Mark Finlay Architects was once again commissioned to design a 450-square-foot “hooking room” studio where the client could create handmade, hooked wool rugs. Sited on a steep, rocky slope and carefully designed around an existing Norway maple that was preserved, the addition steps up from the driveway via a series of flagstone stairs.

Three walls of glass and a centrally placed cupola flood the studio with natural light, creating an inspiring workspace connected to its surroundings. Inside, stained fir casing, crown molding, random-width wide-plank beech flooring, and antique wood beams establish a rustic, intimate atmosphere well suited to the craft.
