French Country Residence

Overlooking the Long Island Sound, this French Country residence represents a cohesive expression of the owners’ wide-ranging stylistic sensibilities. Thoughtfully detailed interiors showcase their eclectic collection of antiques and artwork gathered through years of travel, while the exterior is defined by a series of formal terraced gardens that create outdoor “rooms” used as frequently as the spaces within.

Flared slate roofs, arched dormers, and finely crafted iron railings and balconies evoke the romance of sixteenth-century French châteaux, while carefully integrated CT Fieldstone and limestone detailing grounds the composition within its present-day Fairfield County context. Central to the design concept was establishing an authentic French Country aesthetic while forging a strong relationship between the house and its landscape. The steeply sloped site, descending directly to private access along the Sound, presented both a challenge and an opportunity. In response, the home and its gardens were strategically terraced and oriented to preserve expansive water views while softening the dramatic grade. The cascading arrangement of garden walls and outdoor spaces seamlessly integrates architecture and landscape, guiding the experience down toward the shoreline.

Another key objective was to maintain the intimacy and charm characteristic of the French Country style while accommodating the home’s substantial scale. This was achieved through a carefully composed massing strategy, in which the central volume serves as the initial focal point, with the full extent of the residence gradually revealed from the waterfront side. The result is a home that feels both gracious and inviting—its true grandeur discovered through movement across the layered sequence of outdoor living spaces and gardens.
