Hilltop

Perched on a sloping hill overlooking an Atlantic estuary, this historic residence dates to the 1890s. Believed by some to be an undocumented work of McKim, Mead & White, the three-and-a-half-story house underwent a meticulous restoration after more than four decades of decline.

The project involved a comprehensive rehabilitation of the original structure, including the precise replication of exterior detailing and moldings, as well as the careful hand excavation of the lower level to preserve the existing fieldstone arches. What was once an open arcade was thoughtfully glazed to create an enclosed indoor lap pool and spa, transforming a historic architectural feature into a contemporary amenity.

A sensitively designed addition was introduced at the north end of the residence, expanding the footprint to accommodate modern programmatic needs while maintaining the architectural integrity of the original 19th-century design.
