Lakefront Shingle Style
Lakefront Shingle Style
New Canaan, Connecticut
Mark Finlay Architects originally designed this expansive Shingle Style country residence in 1994 and, in 2013, was commissioned by new owners to thoughtfully reinterpret the home with their own vision. Encompassing 10,000 square feet, the residence is carefully sited to capture sweeping panoramic views of scenic John D. Milne Lake, fully embracing its natural setting.
Rooted in the Adirondack Shingle Style tradition, the home is defined by cedar shingles, eyebrow windows, hipped dormers, asymmetrical massing, and signature tower elements, all complemented by the warmth and texture of Connecticut fieldstone. These architectural elements combine to create a composition that feels both timeless and regionally grounded.
Inside, the design balances classic detailing with a light, contemporary sensibility. Simple classical columns in the entry hall establish a sense of order, harmonizing with beadboard paneling, crisp white finishes, and thoughtfully integrated built-ins that provide both function and visual continuity. The great room serves as the heart of the home, with a second-floor overlook enhancing its openness and connection between levels. Arched pine beams, painted white, reinforce the airy character, while expansive windows invite abundant natural light and frame uninterrupted views of the lake and surrounding woodland.
The second floor overlooks the great room, and combined with arched pine beams painted white and the open floor plan make this room the heart of the home. Large windows were designed to take in as much natural light as possible, while providing the homeowners with expansive views of the lake and surrounding woods.
The landscape and auxiliary structures extend the living experience beyond the main house. A stone walkway weaves through the property, connecting the residence to a neighboring Shingle Style cottage—also designed by the firm—which now serves as a dedicated music studio. Outdoor amenities, including a fieldstone terrace, wraparound porch, pool, and sweeping lawn, provide a variety of spaces for relaxation and entertaining, all oriented to take full advantage of the lake’s striking vistas.
