New ‘Old’ Barn
New Canaan, Connecticut
Nestled carefully into the landscape of a New Canaan residence, this rustic modern barn represents the third commission on this property for a long-time client. Drawing inspiration from an original vintage barn, the structure showcases an exposed antique timber frame, while deep blue exterior accents provide a striking contrast to the antique barn siding. Conceived as a relaxing retreat, the two-story barn includes a compact kitchen outfitted with a basin sink, under-counter refrigerator, and floating Lucite shelving. A dynamic blend of old and new, raw timber craftsmanship and expressive joinery are juxtaposed with sleek black steel window frames and stainless-steel wire railings. The transparent, symmetrical layout is reinforced by oversized steel windows that establish clear sightlines through the entire building, while deep blue barn doors, suspended on a sliding track, fully open and close to connect interior and exterior spaces.
