RED BARN

Located in Fairfield, Connecticut, this Federal Colonial Revival residence achieves a graceful balance between tradition and modernity. The design team at Mark Finlay Architects conceived a home that reflects the owners’ personal taste and lifestyle while remaining firmly rooted in the architectural vernacular of the surrounding Sasco neighborhood.

Quintessentially New England in character, the exterior presents a composed and timeless colonial façade, its proportions and detailing carefully calibrated to its context. This sense of tradition gives way to a crisp, contemporary interior, where clean lines, light-filled spaces, and modern amenities redefine the experience of a classic form.

Positioned just beyond the home’s south elevation, the pool house is conceived as a striking red barn, complementing the traditional white clapboard main residence while introducing a more relaxed, social character to the property. Encompassing approximately 1,600 square feet, the timber-frame structure functions both as a pool house and as an inviting setting for entertaining.

The first floor is organized as an open gathering space anchored by a fieldstone fireplace set beneath wood cathedral ceilings. Fir posts and beams, infilled with plaster, subtly define distinct zones within the volume, creating a sense of intimacy while preserving openness. Expansive glass pocket doors open seamlessly to an exterior terrace, blurring the boundary between indoor and outdoor living.
